Chapter 9: Lucifer

I held my forearm against the guy’s throat, pinning him against the wall as I held a gun up to his face. The door down at the end of the hall opened and Dante entered, his eyes going wide when he saw the situation.

“What’s up, Luc?” There was an edge to his voice, a nervousness that sounded completely alien coming out of his mouth. I realized he hadn’t seen me hold a gun since we had returned to the States. It was understandable. I actually hadn’t held a gun since returning. Until now. I didn’t want to admit it to myself, but I had sort of missed it.

I nodded towards the guy. “This chump pulled a gun on me.”

“You pulled your piece first,” the guy gasped, struggling to breathe.

I slammed my knee up into his groin. He groaned, his legs going slack, my forearm the only thing keeping him from falling down. “I don’t mess with guns anymore, asshole. Haven’t carried a piece in years.” I pressed my arm against his throat. “Now tell me another lie.”

Dante approached slowly. “Ease up, Luc. Was he robbing the place or what?”

“On the floor,” I said, glaring at the guy, concentrating real hard on not pulling the trigger.

Dante knelt down and picked up a photo that had been face-down on the ground. “Shit! Is that—”

“Krista? Yeah, that’s her.”

He picked up what looked like a wallet. Flipped it open. Saw the badge. “God damn it, Luc. He’s a cop.”

‘Relax,” I said. “He’s not local.”

“Great. That makes a big difference.”

I nodded. “It actually does. In Houston, he’s a cop. In Vegas, he’s just some guy with a badge.”

“A cop is always a cop, Luc.”

I shook my head. “Except when they’re doing something they shouldn’t be doing.” I eased the pressure on the guy’s throat. “Tell me again. Why are you here?”

“Fuck you,” the cop gasped, his voice ragged.

I whacked him on the forehead – not too hard – with the barrel of the gun. “That’s cute. You don’t want witnesses. I get it.” I pressed the gun against his eye. “Last chance. If anything besides the answer to the question comes out of your mouth…” I smiled. “You can figure it out.”

“Fuck, man,” the cop groaned. “Ain’t no bullshit worth this. A guy I work with knows I like Vegas. Asked me to come here and look for her.”

“And?”

“Can you take that fucking gun out of my eye?”

“No.”

The cop sighed. “And to keep an eye on her if I found her. Make sure she doesn’t leave town or nothing.”

“What’s your pal’s name?”

“Mike Gordon. Detective Mike Gordon.”

I chuckled. “Detective Mike Gordon,” I repeated, mimicking the tone this scumbag had used. “Yeah, like I give a fuck about that.”

I pulled the gun from his face and looked at Dante. “He already said he gave his buddy a call to let him know she’s here.”

“Why are the cops interested in her?” Dante asked.

I glanced at the guy. He shook his head as much as could with it pinned between my arm and the wall.
